I am hoping someone may be able to help me out in regards to hostels....
My problem is that I am rather clueless about how long to book into my first hostel for...
I am pretty sure i am going stay at Gilligans and it looks like I'll be arriving in Oz mid Oct. I wanna be somewhere really fun for Halloween so I was thinking to book for a fortnight and then at least I have the security of knowing i dont have to rush around sorting accomodation out and can get my head together... but... i dont know if a fortnight in the same place is a 'not the norm'?
I am also booking my hostel for New Year in Sydney and i am having to book at least 10 days but i understand thats purely because of the time of year...
Any help would be amazing at this point as i am hoping to book in the next week.
When I was in Cairns Gilligans was loud, probably ok for a few nights but if you're planning on doing anything during the day you'll need some sleep
I reckon a week would be enough to get your head together, you can always try extending your stay if you want longer. I booked into a place in Darwin for 3 days and after the first night I had enough, couldn't get a refund so ended up losing 2 nights cash.
The best hostel I stayed in when I was in Australia was in Cairns - Travellers Oasis. Fantastic place, really social, without being ridiculously loud, great dorms with no bunks, you get given your own towels, etc, and just generally a really nice vibe.
I went in Gilligans to meet a couple of friends and they weren't overly complimentary about it.
I went ahead and bloomin' booked Gilligans for the full 2 weeks because i have zero patience... If it is horrid then ill just have to leave but i have got 13 nights booked in there now for the beginning of my stay!
Also booked my Xmas and NY accomodation and its not very nice as there's not much left in Sydney hostel wise so I am in D*Luxe Hostel. Its not as nice as i had wanted to book but i think i picked the best out of what was left on Hostel World.
I've booked Gilligan's for my first week (mid Sept). I figured a 'party' hostel would be a good starting point so I can meet people! It is difficult to judge how long to book for! Am sure you'd be able to amend your booking if you wanted to. Depends how many places you want to visit before you get to Sydney.
At least you've got somewhere sorted in Sydney, I haven't heard if D*lux is any good, but it can't be that bad! You'll be having too much fun to spend much time in your hostel anyway
I'm booked into the Glebe YHA from 22nd Dec til after NYE.
