I'm going to be in Rio for the carnival in Feb next year, wondering if anyone has booked hotels/hostels that aren't too badly priced?

I'll be on my own too so let me know if anyone is around!!

Nothing cheap in Carnival time in Rio. Already accommodation is filling up and the best seats are being taken. though half a year away, book flights, accommodation, etc ASAP. Prices will go up and up.

In 1983, I was in Las Palmas (Gran Canary) and they had the Rio Carnival on TV. I watched some, went out for six hours and came back and people were still filing past in costume. I don't know about you but I could soon get "Fancy-Dress fatigue" watching it. I suppose the main thing is the night celebrations?

Many places have carnivals though not as big as Rio. The Notting Hill Gate one in London in a month's time is very big and a lot less more accessible and hassle. A number of places on mainland Spain, Tenerife, etc have Carnivals in February and March which are OK if you just want a good parade and some colourful photos.

Agreed with the above about prices - hostels in Rio in summer are usually R$50 for a dorm. This goes up to R$150 during carnaval, and you have to stay a minimum of 7 nights. This is true for most hostels, good or bad. I met a lot of people who got together with other travellers/friends and rented apartments, which worked out at around R$80 a night.

If you can't do that, I can recommend a hostel in Ipanema - The Mango Tree. Great hostel in a great location!

Have fun :)
