KZN Traveller has indicated that this thread is about New York City

It is my first time travelling to USA - travelling with my sister. I would really like to bring my favourite tea & chutney with me, from home, but wanted to know if the security at JFK would have an issue with that (I would put them in my checked luggage). We are flying in on Emirates & they will likely selophane wrap my luggage anyway....would I have to declare it to customs, or would it go through security?

The tea you will have no problem with. The chutney may be OK if it is in a sealed jar. The Americans are a bit fussy with any food coming into the country.

As they are not liquids, flammables, explosives, pointed objects and such I would not declare them. Unless you see a "No chutney allowed beyond this point" sign at the airport.

Thank you! Do you think either being seen by the scanner would cause a physical baggage search? My connection time at JFK before flying on to Orlando is only 3hours, so I would prefer to avoid any possible delays.

Quoting KZN Traveller

My connection time at JFK before flying on to Orlando is only 3hours, so I would prefer to avoid any possible delays.

On my last trip I had only 45 min between connecting flights, and even that was sufficient. So I guess 3 hrs is ok, even in case of a fysical check!
