Is travel safe to these areas??

Travel Forums Asia Is travel safe to these areas??

I was planning on spending some time in Indonesia (Bali and surrounding areas), Cambodia, and the Philippines. I read on a government website that travel to these places is considered a very high risk and is highly discouraged. But yet people and/or travel sites are strongly encouraging it. I realize that from place to place there are areas we should avoid, but want to make sure travel is safe in these areas. Thanks for the help!!

I would have no hesitation travelling to these areas.

Indonesia is a BIG place covering 17,508 islands. Something could happen in one area and if you were anywhere else, you would not know about it till someone told you at a later date.

Bali is a tourist trap and my least favourite part of Indonesia (tied with Medan). But tourists still flock there. your biggest problem there is petty theft and being hassled on the beach to buy some junk you don't want.

Cambodia is still a little primitive in places but it's third world so what does anyone expect?

The Philippines has a slight air of not being quite safe about it but so many tourists go there every year and have no problems. I can't recall hearing of any.

These days, is anywhere safe from fanatics and nutters? I would have put Norway as one of the safest countries in the world but a madman changed that.

I'm surprised that any government would regard those countries as 'very high risk'. I've travelled in Indonesia (Bali and Java) and Cambodia without any problems and it was sad to hear that people were still staying away from Bali because of the bombings years ago. There is currently a dispute in one of the border areas between Thailand and Cambodia so travel to that area is not recommended at the moment, and there is still some insurgent activity in a couple of areas in the Philippines but on the whole all the countries you mentioned are safe for travellers. As Cyberia said, I would have no hesitation in travelling to any of these countries - just take the usual precautions that you would take anywhere else in the world and you are unlikely to encounter any major issues.

Government can't do anything right - certainly can't keep their websites up to date (especially if that was a USA gov site!)

One major problem with the internet - very little is ever corrected or removed that should be.

The UK foreign office website (fco.gov.uk) tends to be overly cautious about where they advise UK citizens not to go, but they do seem to update it regularly.

Most of these government run websites are overly cautious...

I've been several times to these places you mention, and I never felt unsafe! So don't worry, grap your bag and board the plane, have fun!! Just be sure your plane isn't heading to the Sulu Islands, Mindanao, Philippines, but that is the only place in the Philippines where you could encounter some troubles (the rest of Mindanao is safe by now).
