hello! i need to travel in USA for 6 months, and I want to buy a car, rather than to rent it. I have a visitor's visa. Can I purchase a car by myself, buy insurance and register it, or I need to be an American to fully use the car i purchased? Thank you. (I have SSN by the way, but i says "with work permission only").

I have helped 12 TP members buy vehicles here in Las Vegas. A foreigner can: buy/insure/register & sell a vehicle in NV. You can use your Driver License (DL) to register the car. Each state has different rules, but are similar. In NY, you must have a NY DL to register a vehicle. I doubt you want to try and pass the NY DL test. I checked, TN will let you buy/register/insure a vehicle with your DL. I would buy it there if possible. You will also need an address where the DMV can send the new title. Your insurance company will need a local address as well. Hope this helps. Mike

oh, and i have one more question (if you have one more minute :) - is it true that a car insurance in my case will cost me less, if i present the evidence that i have a good insurance history in my country, and also, if i present a university diploma? i've read it somewhere, and maybe you know even this.:)

One of the reasons insurance for foreigners can be expensive is that they cannot check your driving history. By all means bring your insurance history with you. Not sure about diploma, cannot hurt, so bring it as well. Mike
