Me n a group of friends plan to take a looong road trip together. Ideas pitched seemed quite far-fetched. But I can't help but be optimistically hopeful bout it. For example one of the ideas were to fly to a country n drive all the way back to spore. The sketchy details were to buy a 2nd hand motorhome or RV n drive it back hm . Buying a RV woulds save money for hotels in the long run. Seemed like a brilliant idea when your high. But a quick search online the next day crushed the dreams instantly. Forums stated the huge pile of paper work needed. In fact some border crossings are impossible because of visas n driving licenses. The Financial burden is a huge mountain to climb. There are hardly any facilities that can facilitate an RV in SE Asia.Sigh...
Snapping back to reality, the best road trip that is possible is driving a car from Singapore to Thailand and back. I read that you can't drive further than that without much hassle. It's quite dissapointing by comparison.
So forum, is there any one who have any ideas, input alternatives to this impossible-seeming dream?
Why do you want to drive when public transport is OK? You cannot treat Asia as if it is America or Europe. If you break down miles from anywhere, what are you going to do? You can hire chauffeur driven cars (ie: with a driver) in Asia but public transport will take you where you want for not much money.
As to saving money on hotels, while Singapore is very expensive (for what you get), Malaysia and Thailand are very cheap, as cheap as you are willing to put up with.
There is not much to see en route between places either. It is pretty much of a sameness after a while. Sometimes a cheap flight with a carrier like Air Asia is much better as travelling from A to B can be hard work, and far from "an adventure".
If you want a road trip, try west and east Europe.
I just wrote a very detailed message but go lost... annoying...
In short: if you are a spore citizen driving a spore registerred car, you probably might get as far as thailand only without having complicated and time-consuming paperwork (carnet douanier + insurance + for china permit/driving licence), which requires significant investment.
LTA in spore can give you more information on the subject.
If you are citizen of another country, it is even more complicated.
All in all, it is possible but requires a lot of preparation and money.
Let me know if you still explore driving thru "asia" - just send me a message with your concrete planned route.
