rsshapiro has indicated that this thread is about Greece

I'm going to Greece with one of my girlfriends for 7 days this summer. We arrive in Athens and stay a few days before going to visit an island to stay for three nights, three and a half days. Should we go to Crete or Santorini??

Please share your thoughts!

Thanks!

Hello,

My name in Amalia and I live in Greece, so i suggest to visit Santorini definiteley and also to stay in Athens only for two days so as to visit Plaka and Acropolis and then continue to Crete. You will cover all the important sites within two days so there is no need to waste your time in Athens.

Thanks.

Mainland Greece has quite a number of historical sites to see, some distance from Athens (Delphi, Meteora, etc) . I don't know if the present troubles (over finances) will be on in Athens when you arrive.

It seems that most tourists go to Santorini because of some picturesque photos of the place but I prefer Crete which is a large island with a number of good places like Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania, etc.

RS

Santorini has the WOW unforgettable experience of That View The view of the volcano from the villages of Oia and Fira on the caldera, the view of thousands of dreamy travel pictures.
It is a visit that creates a lifelong impact and is most valuable and rewarding.

However Crete, the biggest of all Greek islands, has So Many things to see (too many to see most of in less than three weeks there alone!) - but it has towns and especially villages that are gems... Beaches aplenty too.

-snip-

These will give you a way of comparing the two.

Either way - enjoy the trip.

[ P.S. It is absolutely true that the mainland has magnificent places to see - from the Peloponnese to the mountain areas of Epirus and Ioannina - and many more...fabulous! ]

Happy Travels !
Roger

Hello again,

Yes Greece has magnificent places and one of them is the mainland but in order to visit Delphi and Peloponnese you will need to take either an organized tour or drive there. Both ways you will need to spend at least 4 days extra since there is no time to visit two islands Athens and mainland within 7 days..

Santorini is a must expecially for couples and if you don;t believe me just follow this link http://www.travelandleisure.com/worldsbest/2011/islands
