I'm going to spend a few nights in October in Bangkok before heading into Cambodia, and at the moment I'm thinking of flying from there to PP. Should I book the flights now or leave it till when I get to BK? And will I be missing part of the experience by not taking the bus!?
i would say you can make booking to PP here once you are in Bkk. but keep in mind that October month starting of high season period you might not get the desired flight.
However, i don't think you gonna miss anything if you are not going by bus. it's just a change of transportation not really experienced much for me.
Go by bus to Siem Reap and see the temples at Angkor Wat.
I would fly Air Asia: BKK-PNH. Check prices yourself by picking a date a few days from now, a week, 2 weeks, a month. Then you will know how far in advance you should book your flight to get a good airfare.
Bus or boat up to Siem Reap. I would go overland from SR back to BKK. There are fewer scams leaving Cambodia than entering it. Read about the overland route here. Good luck with your planning.

I agree with vegasmike6 & yippie65. There is no need to be overly worried about costs or flights from BKK to PP. I've done the flight myself and it's convenient and inexpensive. Air Asia is also my recommendation. Flights are common enough that you will not have too much inconvenience finding a flight during a general period of time.
Traveling by air is convenient and quick, but yes, by traveling by land one experiences much more due to the slower pace of travel.
Thanks everyone, will probably leave it until I'm there. I may fly to PP then go overland for SR back to BK (have to head back there to fly to Oz). I've heard the journey back to Thailand is not as bad!
Traveling by air is much more convenient than bus. You can easily book your ticket from BK to PP. It is cheap for you.
