I'm going backpacking in September to South East Asia then Australia at the end of November. I am just sorting out my shopping list now :P
I have read that a Silk Sleep Sheet is a must have for protecting from bed bug bites and dirty old sheets.
I was mostly wondering is it worth me buying this instead of a sleeping bag, or should I just opt for the sleeping bag (I am worried it will be too hot of a night to curl up inside a sleeping bag).
It would definitely be too hot for a sleeping bag in South East Asia, and during 3 months there I never needed a sleep sheet. I stayed in budget places and virtually all of them were perfectly clean. I'd recommend taking a sarong to cover any dirty pillows that you don't fancy putting your head on - I did stay in a filthy place in Malaysia and was very glad of my sarong! Most hostels in Australia will not let guests use sleeping bags because of the risk of spreading bed bugs so you would probably regret taking it there.
I'm also going SE Asia in April next year and then Aus after. I thinka after what i've been reading you don't need either, but i'll prob just buy a silk sleep sheet just incase as they will only be light and small to carry around. What other sort of stuff have you brought? I'm also looking into what i'm wanting to buy now aswell. Only thing ticked off so far is my backpack! haha
Well you're well more advanced than me Dom, I have 6 weeks to go and I haven't even bought my backpack :P I have just started to make a list of what I'm going to buy websites like the backpacking site and start backpacking have been really helpful. I think I'm going to go for a silk sleep sheet, for the same reasons as you really.
I'm defo going to get myself a quick dry towel, waterproof bag for the electronics and a money pocket for under my clothes. Other good ideas you may not think about is duct tape and a head torch, from other advice.
The one and only thing I have bought already is my journal... it's going to go everywhere with me :D
I used a sarong the majority of the time. but found most places to be clean with clean bedding! Australia seemed to have more cases of bed bugs than SE Asia!
