I've been reading a lot of confusing bumpf online about Thailand visa's. I flew into Thailand and received my 30 day visa and after a week left to travel through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and am looking to going back to Thailand to travel around Chiang Mai, Pai etc. Is it true that the only way I can get another 30 day visa is to fly in? or can it be obtained at the border when travelling across by land?
I'm from the UK but I also have a Chilean friend who is asking the same question?
Thanks so much
The only way you can get the 30 day visa is by arriving via plane or pre-organising the visa at a Thailand embassy in the country you are in (Laos in this case).
Otherwise if you cross by land or boat you only get 15 days. You can however do a quick border run, ie. Leave Thailand for an hour and come back in. If you're around Chiang Mai you will probably head across the river back into Laos, then come back into Thailand for a fresh 15 days.
I did it in the south and went to Myanmar and back.
Hope that helps.
I think your best option is to buy a 30 day Thai visa while in Vientiane.
All the above is right but a little advice....I got a 30 day toursit visa for Thailand, at the embassy in Cambodia. When entering Thailand my visa was marked as a 15 day visa! But me been me I didnt really click on. So after my month in Thailand I then made my way to Malaysia, where at the border it all came clear. The police told me that I had overstayed my visit by 15 days (big fine) Luckily after discussion with the officers it became clear to them that I had purchased a 30 day visa but it had just been ticked as a 15 day one! A little confusing, but just be aware at the border crossing to always check what has been done to you stamp!
Have fun on your travels!
Thanks for the advice guys! Oh my god Amy!!! Glad you got out of paying the fine - im sure I read somewhere that if you overstay it's 500baht a day :-/ I'm pretty sure im going to fly in just to be sure. Currently heading down south (Laos) to 4 thousand islands and will probably fly into Bangkok from Pakse.
Ah yes me too! Probs best flying anyway, as you will save time on travel. Well have lots of fun in Thailand! My fav place
Yeah decided to 'go crazy' in the end and paid for a 60 day visa whilst in Pakse - should be ready Wednesday then I'll get the bus across the border - hopefully with no drama and I'll be on me way
