Hmmm, by October it will be almost exactly two years previously that I started my round the world trip in Bangkok!

I am jealous. You are without doubt about to embark upon the best time of your life :)

Well my route was: Thailand - Laos - Vietnam - Cambodia - Thailand again - Indonesia - Singapore - Australia - New Zealand - Fiji - Australia to work - New Zealand to work and travel - Indonesia - Home to England!

I loved South East Asia, so cheap, so different, just an amazing amazing experience. My I loved all of it there, but personal favourites were Gili's Meno and Trawangan in Indonesia, Travelling down the Vietnamese Coast and seeing the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng in Cambodia.

Australia I could take or leave. Tasmania was great, I had a great time on Fraser Island and the Great Ocean Road was special, but other than that it was very expensive, and maybe not as memorable as the other places I went to.

New Zealand is awesome! Beautiful, laidback, friendly, loads to see and do. Queenstown is my favourite town in the world.

Fiji is paradise - I had the best two weeks of my life there. It is just like paradise (well the Yasawa Islands where I went were).

Not sure if this helps at all, but I hope it does!

You get 30 days in Thailand without a visa. More and you need one as they take "overstay" serious. Obviously you need a visa for Australia.

Bangkok is a travel hub and easy to get buses, trains, cheap flights elsewhere in Asia. But you may need to book early in busy times (which starts October).

I was not greatly impressed with Malaysia, though Penang, Kulala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands weren't bad. Another time I travelled by train from Singapore to Bangkok. Boring. Plane is far better.

Some things to see in Singapore but accommodation is generally very expensive there and not always that good.

You can travel by bus and train overland from Medan through Sumatra, Java and to Bali and there is quite a bit to see on the way.

AirAsia and other airlines are fairly cheap, if basic, for getting around. Think of an Asian version of Ryanair. Don't book your flight to Australia too late as prices are fairly expensive. As Steve said, NZ is worth a visit if you can get there. And Tasmania is just a short hop from Melbourne.

Frey201. If you are going to Thailand later this year, you should book a flight ASAP as cheap seats will fill up and prices on dearer seats will rise too.

Hi Robyn,

My flight to Bangkok lands on the 26th October. Have you booked a hostel? Anyone else gonna be there at this time?

Martin.
