I'm looking at adding Indonesia onto my trip after India, anyone know which bits are safe for women alone and which bits are not please? Bali looks lovely, anyone know of any ashrams there? I have been suggested one on another forum, just wondering if anybody has anymore info on it. Also, are the roads and taxis as hectic there as India?
Many Thanks, = )
Though a muslim nation, attitudes regarding women seem to be relaxed on Sumatra, Java and Bali. They live and travel freely.
As to "dangers", about the same as anywhere else, from lechers and the like.
Bali has quite a number of temples, including Indian temples.
The roads aren't too bad in Bali, apart from occasional potholes. It's a bit of a tourist trap, and has been for decades. Do be careful of petty theft there.
I'm Siska, female 22 years.
When will you come to Indonesia? I also plan solo travel to Bali & Lombok for 6 days. Ill be there on November, how about yours? I found a tour package for abour IDR 2.500.000 Its good price enough I thought. Let me know if you want to go with. Btw, how was your trip to India? I plan to there on July/August 2012.. Please suggest me your travel trip there
Bali is a safe destination for a female solo traveler. You can find many hostels which provide varied tour package around Bali. If you seek the cheaper hostel, you can go to Poppies Lane area. There are many cheap hostel for backpackers starting from IDR 60,000. Also, you could rent a motorbike there for about IDR 50,000/day.
Have a great trip!

Have travelled throughtout Indonesia west of Lombok 9 times since 1997 and never had any problems.
Indonesians on the whole are wonderful people who will welcome you with open arms.
All Destination we've to go is risk ,
but , i can say indonesi is safe, and friendly people there .
because i'm indonesian
if you want to go there, i recommend you to Bali, Lombok , Komodo Island and Bandung :D
Crimes happen anywhere anytime, including in Indonesia which is in SE Asia unfortunately.. just don't walk with many accessories / jewellery in midday, avoid walk alone in the quiet streets in the night.. and when you need taxi, always choose BlueBird taxi, that's the only taxi i can recommend.. available all thorough Java i think.
Be careful when you are in the bus station, train station, malls, or any other public places.. beware of the pick pocket if not robber.
Sounds hectic, but you still can enjoy your travel if you know how to do it..
After India, Indonesia will be a piece of cake for you.
The only problem I had was in Bali (I was 24 at the time). I allowed myself to be led to a shop just off the main strip and found myself surrounded by a group of men who tried to force me to buy something (it was early and they were after Lucky Money - first sale of the day) and physically restrained me from leaving the store.
They eventually let me leave when they saw I really wasn't going to buy anything, but it was an unnerving experience.
Apart from that one experience, I had absolutely no problems there at all.
