I just wanted you guys all to know, that i had problems on hostelworld.com. They charged me with the deposit..and although i cancel my reservation 24h before my arrival they charged me for another 100 euro. This i find outrageous. I will not be using that website again and i truly recommend that you be careful and not cancel yr booking. I don't think there is anything else I can do to get my money back, but if you have any ideas, just let me know. Thank you!
Have you read there Terms and Conditions?
If you were charged you either:
a. did not cancel within 24 hours
b. did not cancel with the travelservice provider (instead of hostelworld itself): QUOTE: "In the event of a no-show without cancellation, the travel services provider has the right to charge your credit card for the first night's stay where you have booked accommodation with such service provider, or for the full price of the tour or other non-accommodation travel service in accordance with the travel service provider's terms and conditions".
The 100 euro was probably the price for one night?
Some properties have cancellation terms that deviate slightly from the default 24 hours too, so if it was one of those properties you booked, they would have charged you if you cancelled too late. It's pretty normal to have cancellation fees, regardless of which site you use to book.
It's important to realise that the €100 charge would not have been made by Hostelworld, but rather by the property you cancelled with. If they didn't get your notice of cancellation at least 24 hours in advance (or in some cases they might need it even earlier), then that is what accommodation providers call a no-show charge. Basically it's covering their lost business because it's too late to rent out the room to someone else.
If you *did* cancel with the property in time and they still charged you, then you should contact someone at Hostelworld to follow this up. I must say, I only have good opinions of their customer service!
I have to agree with the others, that it would probably have been taken by the accommodation if you did not cancel early enough.
hostelworld is a poor site anyway with lousy properties not that cheap. There are many better sites like lowcostholidays, hotelscombined, travelsupermarket and even travellerspoint, etc with good accommodation for very little more, and sometimes less.

Hostelworld.com Customer Service
I have used hostelworld.com many times without any problems. However, recently I had a problem with a booking and when I contacted them, they acted like they were an information only webite and not responsible for resolving any problems. So, it seems hostelworld.com is great if nothing goes wrong. If there is a problem, you might find that you are on your own. I am very unlikely to use them in the future.
Hmm... I have used hostelworld.com too and didn't had any issues. Well, I normally compare most online booking websites before finalizing my order.
However, I have stop using them because I now have my own site that helps me to search the best deals from many online booking sites.
If you guys need help in this area, let me know and I will check it out for you.

I didn´t had any problems either. I had to cancel one booking last year and got the correct amount of my deposit wired back to my account.
