I am moving to Australia in Feb 2012, female travelling alone for the first time!
I plan to arrive in Sydney and take it from there. I hope to spend at least 3 months travelling before I start work (as a nurse). I want to work my way up the East coast initially . Is anybody else travelling around this time?? would be great to hear from you.
I'm anxious but excited at the same . I dont want to pre book or plan to much in advance, want to go with the flow really. I do plan on travelling by greyhound though?? any advice?
hi hows it goin. i just recently booked a ticket to melbourne on the 6th of feb. ive spoke to so many people and asked them about the greyhound and everyone has said thats not the only way of transport theres loads of different ways to get around. for example, some1 i spoke to bought an Oz experiance bus pass ticket for like £400 and ended up never using it!
im not planning anything iether, im goin on my own and im just goin to see what happens ! i am traveling up the eastcoast aswell. i think you should pre book a hostel or somesort of overnight stay, ive herd they can get pretty full up and might take a while to get a place. ive also heard its dead easy to get a nights stay but im goin to pre book one for a week or 2 just in case! .
Have a good trip x
Yeah I will have 7 Days booked with a hostel when I arrive, which is free . part of an offer with my visa. Im unsure about the Greyhound business, I know you can buy KM, and exchange them for excursions if you dont use them all. I arrive on 1st Feb. How long do you plan to spend in Melbourne and how long are you travelling for, or are you unsure yet?
We may end up bumping into eachother ! : )
Sounds brilliant. I too plan on working in Australia at some point however will be travelling around for 2 months up the East Coast first to see if I actually like it, which I am sure I will.
I start in Sydney from early March and have pre-booked a week in a hostel just to get me started. Then I plan on just taking it from there really and see where the wind takes me! I think most people just book hostels as they go along. I'm sure that sometimes you may not always be able to get the one you want at short notice, but there is always some accommodation about.
As for travel, I plan on getting a Greyhound pass from Sydney to Cairns which should be fine. Reasonably cheap as well and you can hop on and off at any stops. But again, it is whatever you feel comfortable with. Some people do Oz Experience or even fly!
Hope any of this helps and you have a great trip!
Yeah ive been looking at a Greyhound pass from Sydney to Cairns which includes about 4 excursions aswell. It looks worth it , so im debating on what to book really. Ill probably be in Sydney for about 3 weeks, who knows mayeb a little longer!
I aim to have 3 months of travel before I commence work as a nurse. Ill be working for about 6 months in either Melbourne or Sydney and then I hope to travel NZ, then Thailand, Vietnam etc. Im so excited its unreal!!!
Do you plan to work somewhere specific or just anywhere you can find?
Yeah from what I have heard most backpackers seem to recommend Greyhound for travelling the East Coast so that is good enough for me! Sydney is the place I am looking forward to the most, I really am excited to get there. I have it planned to stay for a week but if I end up loving it could be a lot longer.
That sounds brilliant! I am actually starting my travels in February in New Zealand. So I will be in NZ for a month before getting my flight to Sydney. Then 2 months in Australia, then off to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam for a total of 5-6 months if everything goes to plan.
Then once I have finished that, I plan on going to back to Australia to find some work, build up some funds, and then maybe head to South America and the USA for a few months. I really want to see the Amazon!
Im also so excited! Time is going so slow it is ridiculous. Every day at work is spend day dreaming about Sydney and everywhere that I will visit. Im sure we will both get there!!!
Your trip sounds amazing too!! , what visa are you getting ? im unsure what visas you need for NZ, singapore, vietnam, thailand etc figured id sort that out before I head there. But for Australia ive got my WHV, until i get my sponsered work visa in the 2 nd year.... but who knows where I may end up once I get out there!
I also want to travel USA, South America and Canada! so much of the world to see !!
Its all very exciting and yes time couldn't be more slow, but im trying to enjoy every last minute at home now as I may not be back for yeeaarrs!
Very similar trip to that which I have just got back from! You get visa on arrival in NZ, but need a work visa in the same way you do for Oz if you plan on staying there to work, Thailand you get visa on arrival, for Vietnam I got my visa when I got to Bangkok, and Singapore is visa on arrival I think.
Thanks Steve, thats good to know!
I cant figure out which order I will do everything just yet! but im sure things will flow . I only plan on working in Australia as a nurse, currently getting my registration out there ready. Want to do at least 3 months of travelling oz before I commence work , save then head everywhere else!! Starting off with NZ I think!
Im just getting tourist visas as I arrive at each country which is good, means I dont have to worry about it until I get there. I have just got my Oz tourist visa which lasts for 3 months before I have to leave.
I have a fair amount of money saved up so am just going to travel work-free for 9 months and relax and get a feel for the places, then hopefully by 2013 I will have a WHV for Australia and will build towards South and North America. Im open to any kind of work really, from administrative to bar work! Will hopefully find out more when I go to Oz about how to look for work.
Ha yes there is so much of the world to see, I have so many plans in my head. I have even been looking at Africa in a few years as well. True, I guess I will miss home but I am sure the experience of being away and free will see me through it. We only live once, might as well make the most of it. Don't want to look back with any regrets!
