I will be traveling with 2 of my girlfriends late december through mid january (approx. 3 weeks total). We will be there for christmas and new years, and are planning mostly east coast. We would be open to see some inland parts as well. We are styaing in hostels (which we haven't booked yet) and prefer to rent a car so we can be flexible about where and when to stop in each place and how long to stay.
Does anyone have any suggestions for possible itineraries or must see's? We would like to have some things planned, but mostly just figure it out as we go!
Ive just stumbled across your post and wondering how you are getting along with your plans? I'm planning a similar trip, I'm flying out in mid Dec and then heading on to SE Asia in mid-late January.
I'm travelling solo at the moment (not by choice, but none of my mates can get time off) and I;m really keen to get chatting to people who'll be out there the same time.
Would be great to keep in touch
Ps, wondering also whether you and your friends have booked your accommodation already? Im planning to stay in Sydney over Xmas and NY so reckon its going to be very very busy that over that period
hey guys if you are going to be in Sydney for new year you need to book a hostel pretty soon because all the good ones are starting to get booked up now...
We are still trying to finalize our travel plans-although we are really trying to have no set plan and just see where we end up. We are going the campervan route. We will probably just be leaving Sydney and heading up the coast around xmas.
Are you planning to travel around? Or stay mainly in Sydney?
Do stay in Sydney for NYE, it's spectacular! It would be a shame to be so close and miss the fireworks.
For Christmas you could explore a few things. A BBQ lunch at Shelly Beach (a gorgeous little beach a few minutes walk from Manly Beach), you can snorkel here or scuba dive, if you're into that type of thing. Alternatively you could get out of Sydney and have Christmas somewhere like the Southern Highlands (where Babe was filmed, if you are familiar with our little singing pig) or Katoomba (where you'll find the Three Sisters, the Zigzag railway etc). Both destinations are around two hours from Sydney.
There are many vantage points to watch NYE fireworks from and most of them you have to arrive early. Quite early. Alternatively splurge and do a cruise.
Coffs Harbour is about 6 hours north of Sydney and has beautiful beaches. Well worth a stop. I'd then meander your way to Brisbane, drop off the campervan and fly to Port Douglas. This way you could see some of the Great Barrier Reef. You would then need to get to either Cairns or Brisbane to fly home.
Distances are quite great in Australia so to see a lot in 3 weeks would be going at a very fast pace which I think would decrease the quality of your experiences. Take is slow and enjoy it because, trust me, you will want to come back
