Having an issue with packing! so it turns out that on my 3 month trip trough china, vietnam, laos and thailand i will spend about a week in the highlands in china (litang, garze, dali and so forth). The temprature is about 11-12 celcius and there is some rain.
The problem is this: I do not want to take the type of clothing you would need on a trip like this (going for å trip in the tiger leaping gore), and was wondering if any of you have suggestion on what to do.....? should i just buy something in cengdu or beijing?
And travel safe (and FUN!)
On such a trip I usually wear T-shirts but I will often take a cardigan with me which I leave open if cool and zipped up if cold, as in zero or colder. A small £1 umbrella is handy.
You should be able to buy clothes along the way if you are not overly big.
Tiger leaping gorge can be done in a pair of sneakers too (unless it rains a lot and gets muddy), although a pair of boots would be more comfortable. Bring along a rain jacket and one thick fleece or two thinner ones. Even in summer when at daytime it can be warm in these areas, temperature can drop way below 10C at night.
If you plan to spend more time at high altitude areas in Sichuan and Yunnan, it would definitely make sense to get warm clothing. Sunlight is intensive, so better to have a pair of sunglasses and suncream with you.
You can buy gear in Chengdu (there is a street with a dozen outdoor shops, ask your hostel) but Kunming/Dali/Lijiang has a few shops too. In Beijing, you can also find outdoor shops (including decathlon), however the cheap ones do require some research and time to find.
Quality rain-proof jackets and boots won't be much cheaper than elsewhere. Fake products are available at cheap price, but their quality tend to be much lower (ie not waterproof).
You can buy a warm fleece for app 5-15 pounds.
