I'd try hostels a bit further afield places like Glebe, Newtown, Darlinghurst, Paddington, etc, etc are all easily walkable or just a few minutes by train from Central, and I wouldn't have thought hostels there would be full.

Kings Cross has a reputation as being the dodgy part of Sydney, although to be honest I never found it that bad.

The cross isn't particularly 'dodgy', in fact it's close to some of Sydney's most affluent suburbs.

During the day it's like any other place but at night it's a bit of a party destination which attracts all kinds.

Expect an interesting mix of bars/nightclubs mixed in with seedy brothel/strip joints.

It can get a little rowdy at night and there have been some assaults but they're mainly between drunken youngsters.

Good reviews at trip advisor, but Kings Cross is not great at night. You will find a mix of people at Kings Cross, there will be many people out to rip you off , so take extra good care of yourself, don't become too intoxicated.
