Hello! My two travel companions and I arrive in Bangkok Sept 13, I have been looking at cheap places to stay and scouring this site - have a little list going already - but thought I'd throw out a line and see if anyone could suggest somewhere (or a location at least to narrow down my search) for us to spend our first few nights. None of us have been to Bangkok before and after the flight there I would like to be somewhere easy to get to from the airport (apparently anything on the skytrain line is worth looking at?), but close enough to the action for us to do some exploring before we move on again.

On that note; I'm fairly certain we will be heading north so any tips on how best to travel or must see places - off the beaten track a little if that is possible in such a tourist hotspot?? :)

Thanks in advance!!

I liked the Soi Rambuttri area for cheap accommodation. I stayed in 2 nice guesthouses there (Bella Bella and My House) and there are plenty of cheap eating options in the vicinity too. It's not far from Khao San Road.

Ah yes one of the places I've looked at is in that area, I thought it sounded like what we're after. Thank you!

http://citypointhotel.com/ highly recommended has very good reviews from Trip Advisor and they have a booking engine right on their site which sends you a voucher as well.

I stayed on Soi Rambuttri, My House and Rambuttri Inn, and both were good.

hahaha oops I don't know what I was looking at yesterday but now that I used the correct link - this is a little out of our league! The other suggestions look good though! :)
