Hi All,

I am a US student studying in Chile for the year. In december I will have 3 months of summer vacation which I will use to travel. Im really in the early stages of planning and dont have anything concrete yet. However I have never done anything like this and could use as much advice as possible!

1) How to travel? Bus? Plane? Does anyone know what it takes to buy/drive a car through SA? I have a student visa, perhaps I could get a drivers license. Also what is the deal with the "International Drivers License" How legit is that? I think it would be cool to buy a cheap car and do a driving tour of SA, perhaps that would save money over flying and busing, but take more time.

2) What to see? More countries vs more spots in few countries? How should I go about starting my plans?

I have a pretty big budget but would like to save as much money as I can.

Also I am currently applying for my Italian citizenship and know that an Italian passport would be easier to travel with than US (fewer fees) but I most likely wont have it in time.

Any advice would be awesome!

Hi, pancho!

have you checked out any overland travel companies? they travel all over south america for diffrent durations i cant tell you how good they are but i am booked up on a 15 week trip going from ecuador - brasil covering all of south america, this is one company:

www.oasisoverland.co.uk

if you look around might find some more, this could be what your looking for save you buying a car ;)
