I am planning to start travellig around November 11, being away for around a year.
I am looking at visiting India (train), Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos (road), then onto Oz and NZ to work.
anybody got any recommendations for a good sturdy rucksack? i am unsure what size i will need. I am 6ft 3 so a lenghty rucksack would be fine!
thanks in advance
My route is basically the same as yours apart from NZ. Im 6"2 and got a 60+20litre. seems a decent size as i didn't want too big a bag..
hope that helps
Unless you take lots of camping gear or other special stuff, there is no need to take bigger rucksacks the longer you go.
In fact, if you travel like more than a month or so, it makes more sense to me to bring even smaller rucksack, as you are likely to wash clothes, buy/sell cheap stuff and guide books along the way etc etc.
I usually take my 65L rucksack, along with small daypack, but for trips up to 10 days I only take my daypack.
I have nice clothes so I can crash an Embassy party or a high-end nightclub... normal clothes to look respectable during the day or lounge on the beach... laptop, camera and all the peripherals... all the hygiene products and everything else I need to be comfortable travelling via hostels/hotels through semi-warm countries for an indefinite amount of time and it all easily fits into a 40 litre backpack with room left over.
Travelling light is the only way to go when you're on the road for long periods. Travelling light makes everything more enjoyable...
thanks for your replies people!
got some ideas now. going to probably get a rucksack with a day sack attached. 40+20l
when are you all thinking of travelling?
Im looking at november.
Been travelling for 3 months so far with nothing but a 35l bag! Just didnt need anything bigger. You save a lot with the low cost airlines with only hand luggage, and hopping on and off planes and buses with your bag where you can see it is great. Plus every other traveler envies you which is kinda fun!
Agree with the others. You don't really need a big bag. You'll wash stuff along the way and won't need much room. So 50-65L should be sufficient.
My advice is to go to the camping/hiking store in your town. And get some loaded up with weight and try them out. Buy the comfiest one for you.
I was sort of edging towards getting one 50-65L as I thought to myself how much do I really need to take! That does seem quite a decent size though. Im due to head to SE Asia last week Oct/first week of November, just going to wing it I think lol.
