Hello Greg,

What time of year are you heading this way? Cozumel is where I live and it is a great spot for snorkeling, scuba diving ( or learing such) kiteboarding, and other water sports. We have a new hostel here, Amigos Hostel Cozumel, -snip- @$12 US per night for mixed dorm bed. Note: there are no trains in this region... Buses run very well and price will depend on distance and company used. Email me (address on web site, this site does not allow posting of such) for more details about planning a trip to this region. Living here since 85 so know the area well...
Hope this helps
Kathy :)

Awesome has completely different meanings to different people. Awesome like in "the awesome-est most spectacular, fashionable, and upscale on the planet--or awesome meaning someplace where you pay $20 American dollars to stay in a placethat should cost $50.

Personally I stay upscale when I go to Cancun (Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach), and the "awesome-est" spots are in this area (Riu is just next door and the one on the point (whose name I can't remember is also cool). On the west end of Isla Mujeres is a great spot that won't break the bank, yet parties all the time on the weekend and is totally laid-back all week long.

Other popular "awesome-est" spots are the Club Med at the south end of town--and the places at Playa del Carmen. Lastly--very out of the way--but awesome for a different reason is a very quiet hotel in Akumai--which I just happen to know is used by many photographers to take their "naked model" photos for some prestigious European magazines. (okay, the secret is out--but they used to do this 5 years ago--so I don't know if they still go there every month like they used to)

If you are looking for awesome bargains, hopefully others can help in this regard. I'm not an expert on this--but I would guess that anyplace away from the coast has got to be extremely cheap compared to the top-end resorts on the main stretch of Cancun's beach.

I have travelled all around Mexico by bus and it's easily done for not too much money.

However at present I would definitely not go there. There is a serious war going on between the drug cartels with lots of people dying, and paranoid soldiers trying to keep the peace.

I suppose the Cancun area is safe but who knows?
