Overlanding Arizona into Mexico

Travel Forums North America Overlanding Arizona into Mexico

Hola !

I am on the last leg of planning my overland trip from Canada and into Central America and had a few questions about bussing it.

I want to get from Phoenix to Puerto Vallarta, where I will be staying with a friend for a week. Initially I was planning on booking a Greyhound from Phoenix and going straight through to Puerto Vallarta. Although I am having a couple of issues with this going on greyhound:

-It’s almost a 2 day trip and has 1001 stops along the way.

-Most of the transfers are during the night time

-its $206 USD If I book my ticket now

-I feel like I may miss out on somewhere between that I would really like to enjoy for a day or two before I continue along the way.

So here is a couple other options/considerations I am thinking about:

-Taking an American bus to Nogales and then hopping on a Mexican bus and going to Los Mochis/Mazatlan, spend the night in a hostel and take a bus the rest of the way the next day or day after. Is there a bus company besides greyhound that goes straight from phoenix to Los Mochis or Mazatlan or would I have to stop over and purchase a ticket in Nogales? How hard is it to just purchase a ticket on to Puerto Vallarta when I get to either of these places?

-Should I book a bus ticket ahead of time to get to Nogales/Los Mochis/Mazatlan or just do it when I get there? Would it be more economical to just wait until I get to Arizona at the Beginning of November and Purchase a ticket then?

-I want to be able to travel as much as I can only during the day time. Can I make it on an express bus to Puerto Vallarta in 2-3 days only travelling in the daylight? I am also on a backpackers budget :)

-How are the companies: Autobusses Americanos, Autobusses Tufesa, TBC (Alamos Mexico)? Any recommendations or experiences

-I am also just beginning to really learn Spanish, and am wondering If I should take this into consideration If I want to go in to Nogales/Los Mochis without a pre-purchased bus ticket.

Any Advice or direction would be much appreciated!
Happy travels :)
Jon

Personally (and please don't be offended), I think you are out of your mind!

The Sonora Desert is a very inhospitable place to be stuck in, and Mexican buses frequently break down, etc.

I suggest taking Greyhound to Phoenix or San Diego/Tijuana, and flying the rest of that route.

I found round trip flights from Tijuana to Cancun (leaving on November 3rd, returning November 15th) on Aeromexico for $377 on Expedia. Granted you won't get to see as much (although it goes via Mexico City and you could probably get a free layover there.) But the convenience and the safety is much better than the bus.

Still some people like to live the wild life--and if that's you, I say "go for it".

Good luck--I'd help more, but I really don't know anything about the bus systems in mainland Mexico.

Hahah thanks Calcruzer & Daawgon

Truth be told I am mildly wild/crazy, whether it be skinny dipping in the Shuswaps, or hiking up a mountain made of shale after camping out in the wilderness with only bears as neighbours. So 'go for it' I shall!

:)

(No offense taken Daawgon) Ive actually heard quite the opposite on the bus system in Mexico and from my research it seems decent as long as you go with a reputable company. I am just trying to figure out the specifics of how to go about it the best way. Flying is definitly not in my plans though but I more than appreciate the responses and words of advice

Happy travels

Jonathan :)
