I have just uploaded photos for the first time. Why don't my locations show up in my gallery? I have figured out that I can make them show up by going to edit, reentering the location, then trying to save. I am then told that I have too many locations, and my location turns up in a gray box as well as the white space. I choose the gray box location, delete the white space location and the location then shows up as being mapped. Surely this can't be necessary for every photo?

Secondly, every photo is showing up as being taken on November 30, 2011? If I go in and correct it, it stays correct, but again is this necessary?

Would greatly appreciate any tips on doing this more efficiently. I have already entered 158 photos and have literally thousands more I might submit if I could find an efficient way to do so, with the correct information attached to the photos.

I solved the date problem. It was my fault not the site.

Still can't get the location to stay with the photo when I upload.

Hi Clio, are you referring to the location hard coded into the photo (ie. EXIF data), or is adding the locations after uploading them not working?

Hi Sam,
My camera doesn't have a GPS, so I have typed the names of the locations. They do not show up in my gallery.
Thanks,
Clio

Hi Clio, not sure about the "too many locations" error. I haven't come across that before

There is an alternative way to add locations. Click on the "Map" link in the site's main navigation. On the left there, you will see a small "Photos" link. You should be able to select a batch of photos by shift-clicking on the thumbnails. Then in the info box on the right you can edit the placement of the photos. Or you can drag the marker to where they need to be. That's probably the easiest way to do a lot of photos at once.

Our developer who's mainly worked on the photo editing is away until next week, but I'll get him to check the other problems when he gets back!

Hi Clio, I believe I have figured this out. When you start typing in the location box, a drop down should appear. It seems in your case perhaps it's not... what browser are you using, and do you have javascript switched off by any chance? If you aren't sure whether or not you have javascript on or off, can you please visit the mapping page and see if you can add a trip?

If that dropdown doesn't appear, you are probably ending up typing a location, for example I just typed "Oslo". That then kicks back the error on saving "Too many locations found", which is basically because there are multiple matches for that in our system, and then shows a select box under the input field where all the different Oslo options are listed (Oslo/Oslo lufthavn etc). If you select one of those, it saves the right co-ordinates.

So, clearly, all of that shouldn't be necessary to map a photo, but it hangs on the fact that the autocomplete options need to show as you start typing. Knowing what browser you are using would be a great help in figuring this out!

Hi,
I too have been having problems. I got the red warning saying too many locations or cannot find location.

When I went back to the manage photos section, all of them had the correct location, only a few had the correct dates and most of them had lost the titles I had typed in. I now have to redo all the titles on about 35 pictures. Not happy about that :(

Hi Glynn, what browser are you on? The 'too many locations' and 'cannot find location' look like typical errors when the autocomplete isn't working when entering the data the first time. I have no idea why the titles on photos wouldn't be stored immediately however.

I've had a play - the "too many locations" message is fairly easy to replicate. You just need to not select an option from the autosuggest. It's a bit too easy to get that error actually. I'll see what I can do to fix it.

I've made an update and removed this too many locations message entirely. It was only introduced a week or two ago when Dmitry fixed some other stuff.

There's still a problem now, but it's not as severe I think. Intead, what can happen now is that you'll type in a location and it will just save and seem to all be ok, but really it hasn't saved the location.

This problem only happens when you don't click on one of the suggestions in the autocomplete. It's always best to click on that when selecting the photo's location. If you do that, then saving should always happen correctly.
