New here on the forum and somewhat of an expert on namibia and botswana, especially the Okavango Delta. So if anyone has questions about places to see or where to go, what do bring, please feel free to ask.

Hey Eddie,

I'm thinking of going to Botswana some time next year. I am very flexible with dates so what is the best time to go? Also could you recommend any tours?

Cheers

Hi there.
Ok, a couple of things:
1. Are you traveling from Europe or SA?
2. are you traveling by vehicle?
3. i would divide Bots into 4 parts, and depending whether you are flying in or driving i, leave out some parts or change itinerary.
the 4 parts I would classify as: Tuli Block; central Kalahari ad Makgagikgadi Pans, Xnai Pans, Delta, Savuti and Chobe, and the last one Khutse ad the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
If you are flying in, I would look at as mobile tour operator to take you to the Kalahari/ Delta/Chobe area. They are not cheap however, nor are the fly-i lodges in the Delta.
If you are traveling by vehicle, it will be of great advantage having a 4x4 and planning the trip properly with maps and GPS.
best time to go would be July/August, weather wise at least. It is winter and there is a lot of game concentrated around water. Also, it is not so hot. there is a lot of vehicle activity from SA during the school holidays. Going towards October, it gets incredibly hot, up to 50 degrees Celsius have been recorded in places like Savuti. Rain season starts in November, if it id a heavy rain year, it will rain till end April, and that makes it a very big challenge if you are driving through.
Regards
Eddie

Eddie, hope you are subscribed to this thread.

I'm headed to Jo'burg late March. I'll be in Southern Africa through June/July. I wanted to head to Bots & Namibia straight away for self drive & camping, but it sounds like I should at least wait 'til May.
Of the 4 parts, what would you recommend for self drive?
Tuli Block; central Kalahari ad Makgagikgadi Pans, Xnai Pans, Delta, Savuti and Chobe, and the last one Khutse ad the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Also, what of Namibia?

Do you have a suggested route for those two countries?

I arrive in Jo'burg. I suppose I'll do the garden route in April and explore South Africa, wait for the rains to dissipate. Then try to do Bots & Namibia in May and June.

I can't afford a luxury safari and I know these countries are known for that. So, hoping I can find others to share the cost of a 4x4 (which I hear is necessary in Bots/Nam.
