Does anyone have any experience traveling the East Coast (sydney to cairns) by campervan? My girlfriends and I will be traveling Dec-Jan for 3 weeks and are trying to decide on the best way to go.

Any suggestions of routes, must see places (we like to have fun!) and suggestions on best camp spots to stay overnight??

Thanks!!! :)

Places to visit might include Port Stephens (Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay), Ballina, Byron Bay and surrounds, Noosa Heads.

When considering places to stay, be sure to park your van so that it remains in the shade for as long as possible in the morning. Vans (and tents) get very hot very quickly in the morning Summer sun and it can become extremely uncomfortable not long after sunrise.

Make sure you bring mosquito repellant.

James- If we only have 3 weeks, do you think it is worth it (or will we have enough time) to go all the way up to Cairns?
Also, where would be a fun place to spend New Years? We will be somewhere up the Gold Coast at that point in our travels.
Are you located in OZ?

Thanks for the tips!

I think although people see the distance on the map, it's not till they start traveling they realize just how far that east coast is. I'd say you'd be really pushed to make it all the way up to Cairns without skipping a bunch of stuff and just spending your entire time driving.

As well as the places James mentioned, the other hot spots are Sydney itself with Manly Beach, Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay, the starting points for trips to Fraser Island, and Airlie Beach the jumping off point for tours out to the Whitsundays.

Having a good time is more about the people you meet than the place itself. So try to keep a loose plan, that you can adjust when you need to. There is nothing worse than having a great time and then having to be on a plan that means you have to leave the next day.

Do you really need to go to Cairns? I'm not putting it down, but there is a lot of driving from Brisbane to Cairns. Maybe you could do Sydney to Brisbane and spend more time in the places in between, with an out and back to a few places north of Brisbane.

Yep it will be worth it in my opinion, however it may not be if you have to factor in the time it may take to purchase and sell the van.

NYE in Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast) would be a lot of fun.

Yep, I'm in Sydney.
