In a nutshell, I finish my 24 days of Thai boxing on Friday 7th October in Phuket. This will allow me eight days until my 30 day Visa expires.

I'm thinking of flying from Phuket to Chaing Mai so I can tick Chaing Mai and Chaing Rai off my list before I head into Laos.

Once I have done Laos, I will do Cambodia and Vietnam. I will then fly back into Bangkok from Vietnam to get another 30 days.

I just need a few pointers really.

(1) Would you recommend that I can spend 7 days in Chaing Mai and Chaing Rai or shall I just do one of them before I head into Laos?

(2) What border shall I cross to get into Laos? Chaing Khong, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom or Chong Mek?

(3) Or does anyone have any suggestions of how I should spend those 7 days before my visa expires.

Once I fly back into Bangkok at the end of my 30 days I can explore a bit more of Thailand.

Any tips will be much appreciated.

Unless you are seriously into trekking you might find 7 days is too long in that region. 2 days in Chiang Mai would be enough, and I've heard Chiang Rai is nothing special. If you definitely want to stay 7 days in this region I'd highly recommend Pai - it's a really great little place to hang out in a for a few days and you can arrange treks from there.

I'd recommend crossing the border at Chiang Khong and doing the slow boat down to Laos. Have a look at this thread for more info on that.

I'd say 2 days in Chiang Mai is a little on the short side. Between the town itself (with its many impressive wats and the night market), Doi Suthep (with a gorgeous wat and palace gardens) and the Wiang Kum Kam area (with ancient ruins and chedis), there's quite a bit to explore. 4-5 days would be comfortable, though.
