Hey all...

I know we all hate random questions with no direction but I'm stuck :(

I will go on Honeymoon with my Hubby for three months (mentioned above) to Indonesia. Our return flights will start and end in Bali........we have a huge list of places we want to visit but to be honest we're confused.... we have heard so many mixed reports about the rainy season, transportation/river issues and also about the avoid places. When I say avoid i should clarify....i mean that at one stage we were looking at doing Indonesia and Philippines but were advised that the linking ports/cities weren't advisable/safe and then the ones we found were over budget...

Soooo if you had three months in Indonesia what are your must see destinations keeping in mind the time.... :)

So our story for help of suggestions:

  • Dutch Male 38 (Will go 39 while away), Irish female 31 (will go 32 / or 25 :) while away )
  • Backpackers in general, no wheelie suitcases and basic supplies....as in min clothes (lots of hand washing) but at least one 'nice' thing for better places
  • Budget is about 1000-1650 euro's a month......this depends on saving and excludes returns flights but includes for the journey all hotels / transportation/ daily costs etc...
  • we're not anti-social at all but really dislike the planned tours / agency packages.....
  • No problem with hostels but would prefer privates rooms with or without shared bathrooms at least for half the week.......and though i can party, well my husband prefers a quieter place so not too many party places to stay :) we can always go out for that
  • mmm what else, we like to hike, swim, take photos, nature, good food ......

Any help /guidance or kicks would be appreciated......

Hi Rraven,

As I mentioned in another recent post Indonesia does not have hostels, more like homestays with your own room and attached bathroom in most cases.

Before I suggest any places I am interested to know what you are doing about visas for Indonesia.
There are no 3 month visas.
You will need to apply for a 60 day visa in a country outside Indonesia and from the date of Application you have 90 days to enter Indonesia. On entering Indonesia your 60 day visa begins.
These days you are able to extend your visa 30 days at a time for 250,000 rupiah and this can be done up to 4 times.
Extensions will mean you need to have an Indonesian sponsor with a current ID card ( no cost to them at all.) to accompany you to immigration office.
But NOTE a 30 day visa on arrival at the airport can only be extended ONCE., so not applicable in your case.

I have been to Indonesia 9 times since 1997 and I lean towards the west direction of Lombok.
May I suggest
Bali.
Lombok - esp the south - Kuta Lombok.
Java.
East- Gunung Bromo, Kawah Ijen.

Central - Yogjakarta, Borobudur and Prambanan temples, Solo, Dieng Plateau.

West - Bogor - Botanical Gardens, Cianjur - chance to experience life in an Indonesian home and the village around, Bandung and Pangandaran Beach.

Sumatra .
West - Padang, Bukittinggi, Lake Maninjau, Harau Valley and Gunung Kerinci.

North - Medan, Bukit Lawang, Tangkahan, Lake Toba, Brestagi.

Aceh. South - Ketambe - wild orangutans - jungle, rafting on Alas river.
North - travel from Ketambe up the middle of Aceh stopping off in Takengon, then onto
Banda Aceh and go to Sumur Tiga on Pulau Weh for a little luxury by the water.

I will be back to answer questions and provide more individual information.
Pamela

Hi Pamela / All

Ravens hubby here. I have a different question. Does anybody know if it is possible to get a 90 days visum for Indonesia. I know you can get a 60 days visum. If we would get a 60 days visum is it possible to extend this in Indonesia? Or do we have to leave the country in order to get back?

Also is there somebody who has ever been to the Raja Ampat Islands? It looks like it is quite expensive to get there and the accomodation also looks a bit expensive? Can somebody maybe recommend a cheap way to get there and some nice accomodation on the islands?

Hi Raven's hubby,

I wrote all the details about the visa in my first post.
Please read carefully as it is all explained in very clear English.
Here it is Again.

Go to www.tripadvisor.com for information about Raja Ampat islands. Do a search on the site.

Hi Pamela,

Rraven back again, thank you for the copy and paste to my hubby and advise to check a different website. I personally prefer to always check TP first for assistance as in most cases the people are the friendliest and most helpful that I have ever met online and in person.

I understand that half of his post was referring to something that you had already posted, yes he maybe should have read your initial reply more carefully but then who hasn't let excitment about a pending trip get the better of them. I personally find your reply to be sarcastic and offensive.

I will search with alternative methods further. Thank you for your assistance thus far.
