As I should be going in April for around 2 months I was wondering what kind of items backbackers took that they found useful?

True, the less - the better.

Not only because you can buy all useful stuff in Asia much cheaper than in expensive Europe, but also because you won't attract any robbers. On my trip through Asia last year I've met some people who travelled with pricy items such as Ipod, brandnew Digicam, Camcorder, etcetc, and these people were always worried, when they f.i. went out for dinner and had to leave their items in a cheap and rather unsecured accommodation. You'll be so much more relaxed if you possess nothing that it worth to be stolen! But that's just the way I feel, surely it also depends on the places you're staying at and many other factors...
