I should have about £4000 spends by the time I go excluding flights as I want to buy my flights this year and start saving come January.
I've always wanted to go to Australia and as I mentioned before I'm not sure if my spends will last the whole 3 months and so I've been told Thailand etc is much more affordable.
To all those who have travelled would you recommend hostels over hotels? My reason being that I think i'll meet more people in hostels and hopefully get to travel with them so im not all alone haha.
"To all those who have traveled would you recommend hostels over hotels?"
Once you leave Bangkok you won't find so many hostels in Thailand. Small hotels and guest houses with air, hot water, private toilet and TV start around 600 baht. Some smaller cities even a little cheaper and with Phuket running higher than Bangkok. Personally I prefer hotels over hostels so I don't have to share toilets and showers with strangers.
Singapore will be more expensive than Bangkok. Kuala Lumpur, my opinion, is more expensive than Bangkok. Bangkok has many small cheap hotels and the beer is cheaper too! Penang is not too bad.
You won't have a real problem meeting other people. You will meet other tourists in restaurants, bars, on tours and when using transportation. There are many tourists who prefer to travel alone.

go to the philippines, way cheaper then thailand and easy to get friends here, everyone speak english! thailand is sooooooooo 2002
I'm 28 this November and am in the middle of planning my next big trip across Russia on the Trans Siberian and then Down through China and across to the Phillipines, then Malaysia and then onto Australia for a year on a Working Holiday Visa!
With £4000 you would have more than enough in my opinion to spend 3 months in Australia. As long as you stay in Hostels and don't eat out in fancy restaurants you should be fine. Check out the Greyhound Bus company for cheap ways of getting around too!
Hostels are the best place to stay in my opinion as you get to meet some amazing people from all over the world which in my eyes, is one of the best parts of travelling!
You can always book a private en suite room in a Hostel too if you're that bothered about sharing a bathroom or bedroom with anyone.
If you go to Asia, Air Asia are definitely the best for cheapest flights and these are much cheaper countries to travel around. There's some great train travel to be done in Vietnam and China which is a good way of seeing more of the country you're travelling in.
Happy Travelling and welcome to the Travelling community!!!
Jeez 24, old! What's young then... 14?!
I travelled Thailand/Laos/Vietnam/Cambodia aged 24 and it was the best experience ever. Don't feel scared, millions of people are setting off on this trip every day and that route is one of the most established in the world, with plenty of travel options, accomodation, tours etc to help you get along.
I would leave sooner rather than next summer though. We went Nov - May and had perfect weather the whole time.
Oh yeah - and I spent £3500 in six months so you have plenty of money

save up some more and travel around Southeast Asia!
Same age, same situation as you. I have also decided to take a long break to travel SE Asia on my own, even though I'm broke. Just do it!

Age has absolutely nothing to do with anything. It is attitude and how you see life.
Sounds like you need to have some time off travelling to refresh you and get you to see life in a different way.
May I suggest Indonesia - I know you are thinking of Thailand, but Indonesia is indeed wonderful and I have visited there for 4 months in 2000 when I was feeling very similar to how you feel now and it was my saviour.
Been back 7 times since and hopefully again next year.
Have loads of contacts and can help you if you wish. Just send me a message.
Pamela. ( whose birthday is in Nov too.
