My grandparents traveled until they were in their late 70s. You're definitely not too old to travel at 24.

I'd agree SE Asia is the best choice- cheap and plenty of other travellers, plus a selction of well defined traveller routes. It can also be as 'foreign' or as familiar as you want to make it. My friends son was going on his gap year and I advised SEA as best choice. He chose to start in Khatmandu against my advice- found there were few people his age, no real traveller scene and as a consequence he got lonely and only lasted a couple of weeks. Ended up in SEA and loved it!

we started travelling at the ripe old age of 60 that was 10 years ago and we are still going at it, back to Thailand next year there are so many people travelling round South East Asia dont be afraid of talking to all age groups for information on accommodation, places to visit, good beaches etc. Wish we could have travelled in our younger days but we didnt have the money having to bring up 3 sons, now we have the money but we are a bit long in the tooth so to speak but we still love and shall continue to travel the world for a few more years yet......good luck..Stokesy

Hey mate,

I'm 26 y/o, going out for the first time to S.E.Asia in a few weeks, originally planned on staying for 3 months!

I spent the last 2 years wondering if i should focus on career etc and all that crap but always at the back of my mind was the fact that I just needed to get away and travel / do something totally new for a bit before I could settle!

Its either that or feel regret everytime a holiday programme comes on the tele!

eventually hauled myself up to the travel agency after a couple of beers and half hour later... i had a Bangkok return!

I have been worried about budget throughout my planning! the best thing to do is buy The Lonely Planet guide as it gives an up to date country by country recommended amount! But numerous hours going through different scenarios, ideas, costs, activities has worked out a rough budget similar to that recommended by TLP...

£4000 actual spending money, even including a couple of internal flights and the odd police bribe should get you one hell of a time! you could live in hotels for that, seriously!

break it down and it works out at 4000/90 days - £45 - which is just shy of 70 usd per day! Ample!

I have a similar budget to you hence why the original three month plan could extend quite easily to 6 months if I am careful!

As for age, your still a kid!

any other thoughts... jabs/malaria/ travel buddies/ just ask... !

Have fun!
