Thinking about hiring a car in Oz to do this.

Has anyone done this before?

Yeah, I did this last December. Rented a car from Melbourne for two days (europcar with YHA discount - it wasn't quite high season yet, and the car was booked only a day in advance, which gave a rate of something like ~$40/day), drove down to Port Campbell on one day, and and then back on the second day. Stayed at the YHA in Port Campbell: one of the least appealing YHAs I've stayed at, avoid if possible (though I guess it's not too bad for just a night). Also, all restaurants and the like close pretty early at night - if you don't bring any food, then make certain to have dinner _before_ you go and watch the sunset over the twelve apostles.
The good thing about staying in Port Campbell is that you're really close to the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge and all that, and so can do something crazy like waking up well before sunrise to go and watch the pretty colors. Definitely worth it to see the cliff face lighting up all orange like. Shame it doesn't last very long.

Make certain to take the sideroad down through Otway National Park to watch the Koalas. Ooh, and look up when high tide will be (and hope that it's a high high tide), so you can go and watch the blowhole near Loch Ard Gorge perform.

You drive on the wrong side of the road in Ireland as well, right? :) So that means you shouldn't have any problems with that...

  • ponders other things to mention*

The beaches on the first stretch of road (Lorne, Anglesea and the like) are nice, but personally I vastly preferred the wild landscapes and cliffs and the like around Port Campbell (not just the major sights there, but the entire stretch of road). YMMV.
Overall, the Great Ocean Road has to be one of my favorite drives ever, second only to the stretch of Pacific Coast Highway around Big Sur (california). Definitely worth doing.

Don't forget to do a side trip to Hall Gap, one of the best places to see aussie wildlife in their natural environment, we saw kangaroos eating grass just outside the pub, a koala in a tree in the main street of town, lots of echidnas, wallabies, but no snakes thank goodness
