Hi, thanks for all your help. I have heard of couchsurfing and i am a member of it, however i didnt need to clarify anything with my credit card- so maybe slightly cautious of that.

Buses in America (except on the East coast) are miserable - they pick up and drop off in pretty sketchy areas... if it's at all possible for you to rent a car, that's absolutely what I'd do! Plus you definitely need a car to get around in LA, public transit isn't a good option.

Good luck!

Thanks Mike. So you have to pay to be able to offer your home to a stranger? Interesting.

Yes. Apparently that is how they know you are serious. You have a credit card, willing to pay $25 to join and live at the address you declare. One way to get rid of the flakes I guess. If you ever stay one night on someones couch, it is worth it IMO.

First, assuming you'll be driving, be sure you have dependable transportation. Nothing could be worse than breaking down and not knowing where to get help. Second, get yourself a good map. Navigation system is a good idea, but not really necessary. Third, have more money available than you think you'll need. But don't carry a lot with you. A cell phone is a good item to have, though coverage may not be available in many of the rural areas.

Yes, its possible, and being alone will give you a lot of time to think! But don't be too alone, perhaps set up a phone-in system with a relative or good friend -- let someone know where you are and where you're going. It's safe as long a you use common sense. Don't advertise that you're alone. If you're talking about backpacking across America, that may be a different situation. Same rules, but very dependent on changes in weather and such - and much slower

Good luck and enjoy.

Keep informed about things to do in and surrounding areas. Never be left out again! -snip-
