This plan popped in my head. Renting a car in Giza (or as far from car-hell Cairo as possible) and then passing the following villages/cities:
Al-Kharga (in Al Kharga oasis)
Mut (in Dakhla oasis)
Qasr al-Farafra (in Farafra oasis)
Bawiti (in Bahariyya oasis)
Plan is to stay 1 or 2 days in each place. I am not planning on leaving the (asphalted) road so I will rent a 2-wheel drive.
In which area's will you be forced into driving in convoy (police escorts)? Do you have to pay for these escorts and how much would that be?
Any more suggestions?

the only and the best way to make it is to hire a bedouin guide through your trip he can also cook for you during the trip and guide you through the white desert as it is a place you must visit and shouldn't miss, as long as you will hire a 2X4 car , they take 100 or 150 Egyptian pound per day I think .
here is a mobile number for MOhamed a bedouing guide 002 0127 59 89 733
have a nice trip
Thanks for your information. I see you are from the Bahariyya oasis. I will certainly keep you in mind. I assume you perfectly know how to handle a 4x4 in the dessert (because I don't)?
My plan is to drive from oasis to oasis by road and stay 1-2 days in an oasis from where I will hire a guide to explore the surroundings. I heard it is quite an annoyance to (self)drive in this area because of the police escorts, I don't how much of this is true.
