Hello fellow travelers,
My fiance and I are researching where to go for our honeymoon in January 2013. The problem is that we love places that have the feel and life of the local culture, and we dislike being anywhere too touristy and put on for show. Unfortunately, typing the word "honeymoon" into any search brings up the most touristy places (we don't want to just sit on a beach). Instead, we love to explore a place, eat new foods, hike, and talk to the locals. Another problem is that we can never decide between staying in one place for a while, to get a better feel of it, or moving around constantly.
We'd love to hear any suggestions from people who have similar traveling preferences! We've thought about Argentina and New Zealand because we are traveling in January and we'd prefer to get away from snow and to escape winter for 2 weeks. Turkey has been high on our list of places to visit too, however, but we're afraid of having poor weather for the whole time.
Places that we have loved in the past include Cinque Terre, Italy (which we visited before it became more touristy), Girona, Spain (outside of Barcelona), Granada, Spain, Charleston, South Carolina, hiking through Buckskin Gulch in Utah, backpacking through Yosemite's backcountry, Arenal in Costa Rica, and Hana in Hawaii on Maui (most people only visit Hana for a day, but we stayed for the whole week rather than staying in a resort on the other side of the island).
Please tell us of any places or itineraries that you recommend. Thank you, in advance, for your help.
