Tight budget GBP10 / day
Medium budget 15-20 / day
Comfortable 20-30 / day

Save it for Singapore which is as expensive as most developed countries.

I found Malaysia to be more expensive that all the other SE Asian countries apart from Singapore. I spent a month travelling there and really enjoyed it; I visited Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Taman Negara, Cameron Highlands, Penang and the Perhentian Islands. It's easy to get around by bus as they are efficient, regular and cheap.

I am currently based in Johor Bahru. It isn't really worth a visit, but Malacca is (thought you could do it in 1/2 days) go on a Saturday when they have a street market with food stalls (i managed a full belly for about 2GBP). Timan island is supposed to be nice, but a good alternative to that is Sibu island- you can dive there and stay in an A frame for about 10GBP a night.

If you do decide to head down as far as JB there is a bus that travels from there to Singapore and it only costs about 1GBP. Check out the "causeway link express" i think they have a facebook page.

Not made it up as far as KL yet, but it is supposed to be good. Probably cheap if you avoid eating/sleeping in the touristy areas. Apparently has some of the cheapest 5* hotels in the world...or hostels are between 5-10GBP.

went to malaysia for four days, and managed to go to kuala lumpur and malacca. stayed at a backpacker's hotel in bukit bintang which provides easy access to the mrt and other transport hubs. the petronas towers can be reached on foot. also, jalan alor, a hawker center which offers different varieties of food available at affordable rates, is located just a street away from bukit bintang.
