Hi. would be grateful if i cud get sum advice. i am visting auckland in april and reckon i can spend a week there. just wondered if anyone cud tell me the best sites to see on the north island and if i will be able to see them all in a week?
thanks in advance
I have recently spent 3 weeks doing the North Island with the Kiwi Experience...i loved it to bits and there is so much to do. Shame you can only spend a week, however its quite a small place really and i reckon that you could do at least 4 different places in a week.
Don't waste too much of your time in Auckland, i spent 3 days there and it was definately my least favourite place, it appears that once you have walked along the high street and gone up the skytower you've pretty much seen all of auckland - but hey i might be wrong! Head south at least to the middle of the north island and there is some fab stuff to do, at Waitomo - black water cave rafting is a must... Rotorua (smells rotten)... thermal park with Geysers and Mud pools... also Bungee and a nice walk by the Huka falls takes you to a riverside bathing area thermally heated - is amazing! Also then Taupo - this is where they do the Skydiving, cool little town with the most nightlife we found on the island, cool bar called the Holy Cow, where without doubt you will end up dancing on the tables... hehe!
Hope this helps... email us if you have anymore qu's
Be sure to take in Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Experience in Auckland.
The Maritime Museum on Quay St. is a good see, and, of course, the
One way to see a lot is to schedule the 3 day Northlands Tour
at Great Sights (do a Google search). You'll spend 2 nights in
Paiahia, tour Waitangi, go to Cape Reinga, the "Hole In The Rock"
and Bay of Islands tour. Well worth the time and price.
I spent a month backpacking NZ with MAGIC BUS earlier this year. I wouldn't spend too long in Auckland as Kate has said, I couldn't agree more about once you've seen the main street thats about it - although there are some nice boat day trips to do from the wharf.
Try to see Waitomo - there's a beautiful cave there with thousands of glow worms, Don't miss out on Rotorua - it is a truly amazing place. It was my favourite place in the North Island. Definately give Zorbing a go! I haven't laughed so much in my life!
Check out the Magic bus website, there may be a short tour which may interest you. (There is one called Top of the North) They were fabulous...they look after your accomodation each night, you meet loads of people, and they take you to all the best spots.
Have a great trip
