Hi there,
My Mum and I are going to be in Cape Town for 10 days from the 13th until the 23rd of December. I would really appreciate some advice. I have planned a route, but any feedback is welcome. We are also looking for accommodation along the way – nice as possible but mid-range prices. Any advice on what mid range process are would be fabulous!

We are planning to stay at Ashoka lodge in Cape town – anyone have experience of that?

I plan to spend three nights in Cape town to:

• Chill out, go to the beach
• Spend a full day driving the peninsula via Muzenberg then to calk then toward Simons town and go to boulders beach to see the African penguins. Then drive to cape point.and head to the point nice little walk and then take a drive back though scarborough stop at the beach-all the way back to hour bay and on to camps bay via lulldando.
• Half day to Robben island
• Hike Table Mountain (with guide) Possibly Lions' head

I have then put together a plan based on some tours I have seen, so advice is very welcome. Can we do this on our own? Anything we should miss? Include? What about Oudtshoorn?

We want some adventure, some luxury, lots of wildlife and some relaxation.

Day 1 (16th Dec)- Cape Winelands and Klein Karoo. Depart Cape Town early for Calitzdorp via the scenic and spectacular Route 62, which is South Africa’s longest wine route. After a light lunch at Calitzdorp we visit De Krans winery for wine and port tasting to find out why this town is known as the Port wine capital of South Africa.

Day 2 (17th Dec) - Cango Caves in a guided adventure tour?? Then Cango Wildlife Ranch where you can see the endangered cheetah, crocodiles and other animals. Then drive over the majestic Outeniqua Mountains to the Wilderness National park for a canoe ride through indigenous forest and boasting over 200 species of birds (weather permitting). Overnight in Wilderness.

Day 3 (18th Dec)– Wilderness-Plettenberg Bay – Garden Route. Tsitsikamma National Park. Overnight in Plettenberg Bay.

Day 4 (19th Dec) – Knysna, elephant park, monkey sanctuary?

Day 5 (20th Dec) - Bay for a Big 5 game drive and dinner at the game lodge. Overnight in Mossel Bay.?? Or stay in Knysna?

Day 6 - (21st Dec) – Mossel Bay – Cape Agulhas – Garden Route to Overberg. In the morning you have time to explore the beautiful coastal resort town of Mossel Bay and visit the Diaz museum complex and the Post Office Tree. The more adventurous can hike a bit of the Cape St Blaize Hiking trail. Overnight in Cape Agulhas Backpackers Lodge in Struisbaai. Possible beach horse riding?

Day 7 (22nd Dec) – Cape Agulhas – Cape Town – Overberg to Cape Town. Drive through to the seaside resort of Hermanus for some whale and dolphin watching if we are not too late. Drive back to Cape town for our last night.

Many thanks for any help or advice!
Sula

I'm spending 10 days in South Africa in November and my itinerary is pretty similar to yours, but I have 5 full days in Cape Town. I’m also doing a township tour and a Cape Malay cooking tour. I’ll report back to this thread towards the end of November when I have finished my trip and should be able to give some more advice and recommendations.

Dear Sula

The itinerary you have in mind is great.

2 nights accommodation in Stellebosch/Franschhoek area, while here you can visit the following;
Surrounding wine farms e.g. Spier, Blaauklippen, Meerlust, Neethlingshof, J.C. le Roux, Rustenburg, Plaizsir de Merle, Simonsvlei, KWV, Nederburg, Boschendal, La Couronne, Haute Canriere.......
You can also visit Paarl Monument, Huguenot Museum or drive down to Hermanus where from here you can visit the Harry's Bay, Betty's Bay with it's Penguin Colony, Pringle Bay & Gordon's Bay.

Then fly to Hoedspruit for a few night in the Bush

4 nights at a private game reserve e.g Thornybush Game Reserve bordering the Kruger National Park

Fly back to Johannesburg for your International flight back home.

The above suggested itinerary is very popular with all our International guests.

Please let me know if you would like us to make accommodation, car rental, transfers or activity bookings for you.

Kind Regards
