I watched Before Sunset, on HBO, had no idea what the film was about... But I was so impressed with the screenplay and the characters... It's damn real... I have met those kind of people in my travels and some of lines, I've used them, and I am ESL.

In a hostel in Shanghai, I've watched this film set in BARCELONA, featuring that over rated beauty Scarlet Johanssen, which is also in Lost in Translation. It was a very inspiring film. And the part, when Penelope Cruz mocked the Chinese language made me quit my attempt to study Chinese.

Films set in Italy that really makes me want to go there:

1. Only You- Robert Downey Jr.
2. The Talented Mr. Ripley- Gwyneth Palthrow

The Guy Ritchie film, Swept Away was shot in Malta, though the story was set in Italy.

Recently, I've watched EAT, PRAY and Love.... and Italy really kicked the ass of India and Bali.

Has anyone seen Return to Paradise? Probably not the most uplifting movie but there are some underlying themes about friendship and the bonds creates while traveling that are very real.

I think some must see classics are:

Holiday in Rome, (with Audrey Hepburn) besides the lovely story there are may shots of the sights in Rome.

North by Northwest (Carry Grant), with the famous scenes at Mount Rushmore.

Maybe they were written quite a while ago, but Maurice Collis's books on Burma and his biographies are utterly fantastic. Collis was a British civil servant in Burma in the 1910s and 1920s. Particularly recommended are The Land of the Great Image, Foreign Mud (about the Opium War), Siamese White, and his biography of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore.

Yep, that is the one I mean, and indeed a classic. (I don't know how I mixed it into Holiday in Rome, should of course be Roman Holiday.)
