Hi Guys! I'll be in South America for five months from mid January 2012, and am looking into volunteering positions in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, does anyone here have any volunteering experience and tips? I'm desperately trying to find opportunities which won't cost an arm, and this is proving to be difficult!
Have any of you worked in hostels in South America? I'd like to do that too, cause I'll need to stretch my budget out as much as possible and working in exchange for accomodation seems to be the most practical way to do so.
So if you have any tips, or personal experiences to share, it'd be great!
Also, if anyone is going to be around at that time and wants to stay in contact and possibly meet up, I'd be happy to (solo traveler, I'll be going from Buenos Aires to Ecuador between Jan and June!)
Take care all!

We will be heading to Peru in a few weeks and are planning on spending a few weeks learning spanish in Cusco. I think we will be doing it with Proyecto. They also offer free volunteering but I'm not sure about the details. Check out their website:

I did my volunteering the expensive way a few years ago, as I didn't realise that there was a cheaper way of doing it. I used a company called Real Gap Challenge and, though I had the time of my life, it's definitely worth looking into cheaper options! My first project was in the Galapagos and I did a tortoise conservation project (incredible!) and the second was in Bolivia (Sucre) teaching English in a school.

The following link has a list of websites where you can do cheap volunteering in South America, so hopefully you'll find the sort of thing you're looking for: -snip-

I hope you have a fantastic time! :)

I did my volunteering while I was taking Spanish classes in Ecuador. There was a fee but compared to some other prices I've seen online it wasn't bad. ($30 to the school, and $35 donation for the Aquarium where I was working.) I took the bus from my homestay to the Aquarium every morning during the week and helped feed the animals, give them meds. Then after volunteering, I would go back to school and take Spanish classes in the afternoon. It was really cool, and honestly I didn't have enough money to go to the Galapagos, so it was a way to work with penguins, turtles, and get 'hands-on.'
This is their website: -snip-

Also Montanita is a sick little surf town. You should def try and take a look.
Good luck on your trip!
