I am from Krakow but there is no need to talk about it anymore. Just one important thing - good communication with other cities (only 2,5 hours by train to Warsaw), as well as connections with Budapest and Slovakia - still cheap and interesting - and Ukraine with old Polish cities, like Lwów (currently Lvov) or Stanislawow (Ivano-Frankovsk) or still unexplored for western tourists - Crimea.
When it comes to holidays to Balkans it is worth to visit Bulgaria and Roumania not only in summertime.
[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]
Also if you get to Sarajevo, go down to Mostar.
Poland is a fantastic place to visit, and cheap so perfect if you want to make your money stretch. If you want to travel around around Poland, the Baltics are worth a visit too and not far from there. Vilnius, Tallinn and Riga are all lovely cities and something a bit different.

I'll be flying into and leaving from Sofia.
However, I'd like to go as far north as Poland, therefore I would have to travel through Slovakia and Hungary... is there any tricks to traveling around in Eastern Europe?
also my dates of travel might change a few days within a month of my travel... so I cannot make for-sure travel plans. Can anyone tell me if there are likely to be hostel or cheaper side boarding available in Bulgaria and vicinity in August 2012 timeframe - or if it's likely to be all booked up?
