Just wondering how people get on with foreign curencies whilst away?

it's tricky with coins (often no arabic numerals - like in Thailand or Egypt) - but notes generally do have arabic figures written on one side.

I always try to keep them in my wallet in order of denomination - less likely to make a mistake.

Notes are okay, but I had a problem with coins. Could never tell the denominations, even though the numbers are right there. Had to ask the sales staff to help me figure out which was which, they all look alike! It was like this for the euro coins and the Japanese yen. Ugh.

Hey Jasmine!

Coins are a pain, as you can't change them back to your local currency, so they're just good for Rollos and stuff at the airport.

As for notes, most places charge a fairly hefty flat fee to change money, so if you've got a few pounds/dollars leftover, it's probably best to keep them as souvenirs (or put them in the Red Cross box at the airport).

Does that help J?

yeh that does help, thanks james.

So how do you get on with travellers cheques? (question after question!!)

8. Posted by james (Travel Guru 4136 posts) 11y

I don't really use travellers cheques anymore. But when I did, I'd get a mix of denominations; change large denominations when you first arrive, and change small denominations when you're about to leave!

Now when I need money, I just rob people

ok...perhaps i'll master the art of robbing people then!-honestly the things you people will get me doing, ha! ha!
