Hi all fellow forum members,

Me and my wife are planning a 1 month trip to USA in May/Jun 2012....1st trip for my wife...I have been there before....

We are new to this site and not sure what to say...But i think we know what we want out of this trip...Atleast to make my wife happy...

We have been married for 2 1/2 years and this is the first trip we were able to put together due to my work requirements....

Trying to make it as comfortable as possible for both of us......

Any help from you all would be of great assistance in planning our trip with ease and comfort....

Our trip plan is as follow - Yet to be confirmed

Day 1 Arrival at Los Angeles International Airport from Sydney

Day 2 Disneyland

Day 3 Los Angeles - Solvang - Hearst Castle - San Francisco (381miles)

Day 4 San Francisco City Tour

Day 5 San Francisco - Yosemite National Park - Los Angeles (523miles)

Day 6 Los Angeles - Grand Canyon West Rim (489miles)

Day 7 Grand Canyon West - Las Vegas (272miles)

Day 8 Las Vegas - Ethel M Chocolate Factory - Los Angeles (265miles)

Day 9 SeaWorld San Diego (121miles)

Day 10 Universal Studios - Departure: (10miles)

Here......We are planning to spend another day catching up with my uni mates from (2002 batch)

Day 10 evening - Day 16 afternoon (need to fit something in here)

We are thinking of spending Day 10 night in LA and then plan something from Day 11 - Day 16

We were thinking of going to HOUSTON to visit a friend and thought this would be a little break prior to us starting on the east coast. But its a long way form LA and then we need to get from there NY...What do yall think?

Will it be a better option to make do a HAWAII get away for 5 days instead?

Or do you have anything else in mind that we should be doing ?

Day 16 Home - New York City (Night Tour)

Day 17 New York City (Full Day)

Day 18 Philadelphia - Washington D.C. (136 miles)

Day 19 D.C. - Hershey's Chocolate World - Corning Glass Center - Niagara Falls (3061 miles)

Day 20 Niagara Falls - Toronto (79 miles)

Day 21 Toronto - Thousand Islands* - Ottawa - Montreal (423 miles)

Day 22 Montreal - Quebec* - Boston (552 miles)

Day 23 Boston - Hometown

Day 24 – New York - Just looking around and catch up with my Uni friends

Day 25 to Day 29 – New York/Ohio (Spend some time with my brother and his family)

Day 29 - Back to Sydney

1. Do you think its a good plan?....
2. Hawaii or any other suggestions for 5 days?
3. Are we missing out on anything that we should think about?...
4. Tour group details?....Can someone find out about the tour service if i could provide you with the details?....
5. Discounts for service personnel? i have to look out for any specific websites?....
6. La Quinta Inn & Suite (What do you think of this hotel in LA)?
7. Internal flights...When is the best time to book them?
8. Have anyone travelled on DELTA Airlines or Virgin Airlines to and from SYD - LAX or NY - Syd....Which one to go for?....or should i stick with Qantas?.....

Will think of more questions when it hits my mind and add on as the time passes

Also for your information i have been to 38 countries so far....Will try and give as much as information as i can when i can.....

Looking forward to hear from you all lovely people....

Thanks in advance

Muzza over and waiting out

I don't know what falls under "comfortable" to you, but to me as I look at this itinerary, I can only think "stress, stress, stress". I would very strongly advice you to seriously cut down what all you're trying to do (or to give yourself three times as long to do it all in). Try to savour places, exploring them a bit more in depth, and build in some rest days during your itinerary, as the act of travelling itself is tiring. Right now you don't have time to do more than press the button on your camera and place another checkmark claiming to have "seen" a place, but without any idea of what was there to see. Days of driving 500 miles is absolute madness - that means being in the car for 10 hours; so nearly 12 hours with rest breaks added, and then you're not even seeing anything! In general I think almost every single place on your itinerary needs more time, but I'll call out some below where I think this is particularly true.

Day 3 Los Angeles - Solvang - Hearst Castle - San Francisco (381miles)

The Pacific Coast Highway is gorgeous, but really deserves taking two days to see. Explore the cliffs and beaches in the general vicinity of Big Sur, stop off at Monterey for the aquarium, or at Santa Cruz to have some clam chowder and explore the town for a bit.

Day 5 San Francisco - Yosemite National Park - Los Angeles (523miles)

Even if you are indifferent to nature, and abhor hiking, Yosemite needs at least a full day, just to explore the valley floor and see the main waterfalls, and I'd strongly advice spending two full days here so you can do some shorter hikes, maybe go up to Glacier Point, or over to Mariposa Grove for the sequoias.

Actually, I'm just going to stop here. I just looked at the itinerary in more detail, and really, I could write a line like that every day. Really, scale down your ambitions tremendously: cut half the destinations, either by sticking solely to one coast, or by limiting what you see on each coast (so for example LA-SF-Yosemite, but no Las Vegas, Grand Canyon or San Diego.) Do that and spread out your unplanned day 11-16 over the other destinations, and you might have a "comfortable" trip.

Hi Sander

Thanks heaps....Have been trying to tell this to my wife and i dont think she understands...But your words of wisdom will be a back up to my words.....Hope she will be happy for me to cut down the places and start concentrating on specific places with more time in each places as you have suggested....

Shorten your questions by 2/3 and maybe we'll read and answer - too early in the day to read that novel!

i'll be honest that I only read the first part of your proposed trip plan and all I can say is.....NO WAY! If your driving, you will never be able to get out of the car with the route you have planned. I would suggest that you cut it in half and focus on areas that you have the most interest in.
