Hi

Was wondering what people do with they're passports? Do you keep it on your person all the time, or do you keep it in a safe in the hostel? Im not sure how safe the lockers in hostels are?

But seems a bit of a pain to e carrying a passport around with you constantly!?

ideas will be appreciated!

Im not sure but i think most hostels require your passport so you dont do a runner before paying! If not i would just leave it in the lockers they seem safe enough if you have your own lock!

If there is one thing I always carry with me it's my passport. Would choose that above my wallet basically! Never leave it with hotels either, they can have a copy, but if they insist, I usually say goodbye!
Pain to carry passport? Why? Jeans, shorts, shirts come in all sorts and usually with pockets these days I never carry it in a bag or so. I am always surprised that people carry passports or wallets/money/creditcards in bags. And then complain that they have been robbed.
Everybody can loose their wallet or passport, but thiefs won't steal mine by pickpocketing, because that's impossible in my case. Travelled a lot, never lost a dime. Of course: a gun in my face will do the trick lol;)

There is no indication where you are talking about.

It is a legal requirement in many countries to carry identification, what else have you got?

Thanks for the replies, it seems most carry the passport on them! probably would be safer this way.

I was talking about Australia, was thinking that a UK drivers license can pass as identification?

I always carry my passport in the front pocket of my pants, when travelling. It's harder for a pickpocket to steal from that pocket, especially in jeans.

In Australia, though, you shouldn't have any trouble from the police hassling you about your I.D. (as you would, say, in Russia).

In Europe, if its day time, carry it.

During night, lock it in the hostel lockers. They are safe. No need to worry.

My boyfriend and I once hid our passports in a hostel and forgot them there (they were hidden so darn well). Therein the danger in hiding your passports.

A lot of travel clothing now has inside pockets with magnets and stuff that present a challenge to pickpocketers. Probably a safe way to carry stuff with you.

I do have bit different perspective. Do you keep all your belongings with you even out of the hostel? Well I don't. suppose if you are going to any beach then which option wold be better. I think its better to put them at some safe place which should be locked by you at your staying place.
