I never carry my passport on me - I'm far happier leaving it in the hotel safe or hostel locker. In my opinion the chance of being pickpocketed or having your bag snatched is much higher than the chances of something happening to it when locked up in a hotel.
In general you should always have a passport and copy of your passport - one should be on you, one should be at the hotel/hostel. Which you decide to carry might well depend on the country you are in.
I don't carry my passport around. I mean, what is the point? I just leave it in the hostel locker. I've never had a problem with that.
Morro, in some places, like Japan, you may well be legitimately stopped to check your visa status in places by local officials. I had it happen twice in the three weeks I spent there. It happens because there are a lot of people who visit and work illegally and overstay their permitted time.
In other places like Mongolia, I'd never hand the original passport to a police official who stopped me on the street. There you'd be a lot more likely to be shaken down.
Was wondering what people do with they're passports? Do you keep it on your person all the time, or do you keep it in a safe in the hostel? Im not sure how safe the lockers in hostels are?
But seems a bit of a pain to e carrying a passport around with you constantly!?
ideas will be appreciated!
last year when i travelled to Asia i lock it in the hostel lockers.it's very safe.BTW is you live in some abnormal hotel you'd better carry it in your front pocket. it's depend on the place and time.
I would say to carry it with you but keep photocopies of it and any visa you have back at your hostel, just in case.
Like some people have said, make sure you take photocopies of your passport. Some hostels take back your passports when you check in. If the hostel I was staying in didn't hold my passport then I would always keep it with me and use it for ID.
