Hey LongfordLou,
Where in Oz are you going? Do you plan on travelling around or will you be staying in the one spot?

Well if your going to be doing some travelling then a ruck sack would probably be your best bet. It is worth getting a good quality one, you will have it for years.
I have a NorthFace, it has been around the world twice with me and never let me down. Be sure to get one with back support built-in, trust me it makes all the difference.
Also the zip-around ones are great, I have a top-loader and hate having to constantly pull everything out to get to the bottom. Check out your local outdoor pursuits store, you will be able to take one for a test drive.
When travelling around, make sure to have a tag on it as others may have the same one....learned that the hard way....duh!
Hope this helps, enjoy your trip :)

Hi there,

If you're travelling around Australia, from my experience, you don't really need to bring a backpack. I travelled around Australia a couple of times. Once along the east (more or less, bit inland and to the south, too) and second time west coast (and bit to the south). Both times with a backpack, coincidentally. If you have your own car (second time we camped with a van), it's not a problem what kind of bag you have. You drive it around. If you backpack, you basically end up going from greyhound to greyhound..and half the time the hostel sends a shuttle to pick you up. So you don't have to buy a backpack especially for this. It depends on where you're going, maybe..maybe in the very center? But from my experience, in Australia, it's not really important. A normal rolling suitcase would probably be easier to use, anyway.

Good luck..and have fun! I miss Australia :)
