hello, im in hanoi at the moment wanting to get to laos, have talked to a few people about getting there, lots of differant answers.. but the main one that comes up is get a bus from hanoi to vinh (cau treo)then across to vientiane.. ive asked around and the prices for that 18 hour trip range from 16-24 dollars.. is that the only way i can go!! and also can i get a visa at the cau treo border... has anyone else done this trip.. any help will be good

you can fly - but more expensive.

get visa in Hanoi - directly from embassy will be cheaper.

Go to Laos Embassy for Visa or you can get it at the border. Bus is 16 USD

I did it, took me 25 hours though, inc a stop where the driver took a rest at a house then loaded the bus full - I mean completely full from floor to ceiling, under and over the seats, not the cotton wool padded full we have in the UK - of flooring tiles. The trip was slightly hairraising at times with the narrown mountain roads, shear frop offs and breakneck speeds, but we made it!

You have to do it just so you can have a valid entry into the "you think that's a bus trip? Let me tell you about mine....!" competitions you're bound to come accross on your travels!

PS - If you don't think you could face all that time on a bus, you tcould always do what the two guys on the seats behind me did to deal with this trip. They knocked themselves out with valium, then waking themselves up with red bull, before it all got too much and they had to knock themselves out again. I think that's maybe a tad excessive actually.
