I am about to head off to the amazon for about 6 months and am trying to work out which is the best camera to take. I missed out last time I was there as I didn't have a big enough zoom to photograph the wildlife so this time i need a big zoom, a camera that works well in low-light situations and preferably that uses AA batteries. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I recently bought an Olympus C-725 digital with 8X optical zoom for my safari in Africa. Worked out very well. It's a discontinued model, so I was able to pick it up for under $200 Canadian. Uses 4 AAs.
The only thing I can't speak to is the low-light pictures. I have always had a problem getting good low-light shots. However, the camera does have the ability to set your own shutter speed and aperture, so if you know how to work those things and have something to steady the camera on (small tripod), I am sure you could get some decent low light shots.
I think it all depends on the budget.
If i had the change (and the money) i would go for a canon 1D mark II or a Canon 1Ds Mark II.
Specialy because of the high humidity i would take one that is sealed (and of course also the lenses).
Hope it help.
