hello all, I only read first page ans skipped 2 to 4 :)

I will arrive to Melbourne this Friday 10th Feb, but I guess my situation is harder :D till today I didn't make any booking anywhere, so not sure what I will tell the taxi driver...

and above all I new to the country so I don't know anyone there, if anyone can recommend a decent accommodation for 2-4 weeks and can meet up for a coffee or a walk around, that would be great...

Hi Claire!

Don't be nervous! You'll be fine!

I just got back from my first trip abroad (and alone) myself. Also flew to Melb. I will tell you, I stayed at a YHA--and word was that these hostels are the worst if you want to get to know people. Don't really know why, as I had enough things set up to keep me away from the hostel. But when I was there, people really did seem to keep to themselves. Don't know if it will be like this where you stay, but my advice is not to wait until you are approached. Strike up conversation if you have to. Especially if you are around fellow travelers, they will not mind, and might even appreciate it! Obviously, keep your street sense about you and feel out if a situation is safe, but you should be fine meeting people.

Another friend told me that when he went to Japan, he had brought a bunch of American snacks with him and handed them out to whoever he ran into. that made people happy, because they were good and it was something they didn't have there! He made friends that way, which I think is just brilliant!

I kind of did a similar thing in Melbourne on Christmas. I had a cake and invited everyone to the kitchen! It works! Or simply striking conversation in the kitchen is great, too!

Also, if you are staying at a hostel. You can become friendly with the staff. They may be local or travelers, or have traveled. Whatever they are, they will most probably have loads of information. And if you befriend them, they just might want to hang out on their off days! Happened to me! Now we still stay in touch!

Anyway. Not sure I can give the best advice on everything else as I never worried about all that. But I hope my bit helped!!! Good luck!

Oh! And I will always advocate for Couchsurfing. Couchsurfing group in Melbourne is super hospitable! I would create an account with CS site and join their group if I were you. That way you know some locals before you get there!

Alright. Well, regards!

Bit late to the discussion, but then I've only just discovered this forum.

Will be travelling alone to Melbourne on the 2nd of Apr for my first ever proper vacation, and will be there until the 7th of Apr (Sat).
Went with the homestay option and booked a nice room in St. Kilda.

So yea, if anyone wants to go exploring for a day, feel free to drop me a line.

I'm a 30 year-old guy from Singapore, and yeh, pretty damn excited!

For hostels, try right here on travellerspoint; it combines the results of hostelworld and hostelbookers, two of the largest hostel booking sites out there.
