Matt-uk has indicated that this thread is about Thailand

I'm off to Thailand in a couple of weeks. Ive been before but never to Ko Phangan. Can anyone recommend any decent and cheap accomodation on a nice beach there but not near the full moon parties?
Also, I'll only have a 30 day visa. Are there cheap ways to get it renewed?

border run - at this same time it's worth to spend a few days in Penang.

Matt;
Easiest is to extend your 30 day visa at Imm. Office, 12 days for 1,900 baht. You can do the border run from BKK or Pattaya from around 2,000 baht, gives you 30 more days. It can be done in one day. Many agencies advertise their services in the tourist magazines. Hope this helps you.

Hmm…a couple of weeks is still plenty of time to pick up a 2 month Thai Visa if you near a near a Thai consulate. If not then --

A couple of border runs options.

A. I’ve done 30-day renewals via the Thai/Malay border crossing at Padang Besar several times. To do this on foot take the government bus form Hat Yai bound for Padang Besar (20baht each way), hop off at the border and hire a motocab to drive you across the border and down to the Malaysian crossing (Border posts are 1 km apart) cross in and out and back in to Thailand. (The border is open to foot traffic 8am-5pm) One can also hire a cab in Hat-Yai to take you to the border and back for around 500baht (or) one way, either way for 300baht.

B. If you plan on staying in Thailand for an additional 2 months you might take the train down to Gerogetown/Penang Malaysia, and buy a 2 month Thai visa (15 USD) hang out in Penang a few days while your visa is processed, then head back up to Thailand when you are ready. You could do the same thing in Cambodia or Laos as well only you’d have to buy a visa for aournd 20usd for each respective country. In that case you may as well stay a while.

This is something I never really thought of considering Thailand's visa policy. My plan was to spend 30 days in Thailand and then make a border run (like most people).

I know there are 60 day visas available. I didn't know they were cheap (around $15). I assume it's a tourist visa. Can I get a 60 day visa at any Thai consulate in say Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, or Laos?

i have a question..i was going to just get a 2month visa for thailand at home (Canada) before i left..it costs around $80 CAD. would it be better/cheaper if i just arrive there and then get the visa at the airport..or just do a visa run before the 30 days is up? im planning on going to cambodia and vietnam the first month im there (im planning on a 2.5 month trip overall)

anyways, any advice would be helpful!

Hmm…obviously there is some discrepancy in prices here.

I paid the equivalent of 15 USD in Penang Malaysia for a tourist visa in late 2001 (the current official price now from outside Thailand is 25USD or 40CDN

Ashley, I was quoted 40 dollars for a single entry tourist visa in Vancouver, perhaps they thought you wanted a double entry visa?
In response to your question, seeing as you plan to exit Thailand before your 30 day visa is up, my recommendation is to apply for a 60-day Thai visa in Cambodia or Vietnam. I’m afraid you can’t buy a tourist visa at the airport.

SRussell, Yes you can buy a Thai tourist visas at the Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Laos Thai consulates. The cost of the visa should not exceed 25USD
