90 Day US Trip with Wife and kids aged 14 and 3.

I am in the very initial stage of planning a trip for myself, my wife and 2 children who will be 14 and 3 when we travel late 2014. I want to see as much of the country as possible ( USA) and not fussed which way i go but what i am looking at is trying to see LA thru vegas and new mexico, across to Dallas, back down to the coast of Florida, then up thru south and north carolina and end up in new york.

I am trying to work out what which is the best way to do this in that i either hire/buy a RV, hire/buy a car and stay at motels or i just figured that driving might be easier with our 3 year old and safer and also less restrivtive than train and that we would miss too much if we used public transport.

I would prefer to start in New York and head south then west as we want to be in Las Vegas for my wifes bday which is in October. So i am looking at starting in August then finishing up in October which will be around the 90 day mark as to avoid any visa issues.

From all your experiences are you able to give me any budgeted ideas and your thoughts on my 2 alternatives and if you think my proposed plan is a viable one?

We will have a budget of around 40,000 $aus for the trip.

Really apprecaite any help that fellow travellers may be able to provide.

You won't have a problem with that amount of money. I'd probably use a car and stay in motels/hotels which you can find for $30-75 a night most of the way at least on the east coast. I've done that road trip a number of times, including just 2 months ago - so I can offer some specific suggestions.

For the most part I'd stay outside of the center of town in most of the cities and drive in. You'll save a fortune in hotel fees.

With the cost of gas and the cost for parking with an RV you'll probably end up spending a little less by car.

Feel free to mail me if you want specific thoughts.

Good luck finding a room for $30. in NYC!!! I was there in October and the cheapest I found was Brooklyn for $143. in a basement room.

Hell no you won't find a $30 room in NYC. You can find rooms just outside the city for $65 and in the city for about $100 but you do have to look hard for those.

But down in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia, you can find rooms from $30 - $70. The lower end tends to be quite rough, but for $50 up you can find some nice places if you don't insist on being in the heart of area attractions.
